Our Bees Swarmed Today!

Wikipedia says that swarming is the natural means of reproduction of honey bee colonies. A new honey bee colony is formed when the queen bee leaves the colony with a large group of worker bees. In the prime swarm, about 60% of the worker bees leave the original hive location with the old queen. This swarm can contain thousands to tens of thousands of bees. Swarming is mainly a spring phenomenon, usually within a two- or three-week period, depending on the locale, but occasionally swarms can happen throughout the producing season.

Norm grabs huge handfuls of the bees from the bush and shakes them off onto the super, with his bare hands...

Only stung twice, and not while he was grabbing them by the clumpful (is that a word?)!!

This is video of me being brave and Norm in a hurry and not his usual gentle, explaining kind of guy!

The new hive is set up next to the old one... hopefully they'll stick around!
